THE STORYLINES AWARD

The students at the Centers for Reading and Writing in New York City are ordinary heroes and model storytellers, committed to hard work, education, and expanding their experiences one word at a time.

In a two-fold evening of words and rewards, the Storylines Project brings together great published writing and great personal writing. Each year, an author and a book that touch the hearts and needs of the library literacy community are honored. At the same time, literacy writers—their hard work and their stories—are rewarded and highlighted.

WHO CAN SUBMIT:  Any student enrolled in the Center for Reading and Writing’s city-wide program may submit a piece of their own writing for the Storylines Award. All applicant pieces will be read and judged by author Naomi Shihab Nye.

Every student submitting a piece receives a free copy of the judging author’s book, affixed with the Storylines  seal.  

On October 26, Naomi Shihab Nye’s book, Honeybee, will be awarded the Storylines Award.  Ms. Nye will discuss literacy with the students and library community at the awards celebration. She will honor the four finalists and twelve honorable mentions from the student submissions. Each student selected will be recognized for their efforts and achievements, and awarded a gift from the NCV Foundation 

Food, music, and a photography exhibit will follow the event.  Participants will have the opportunity to meet the author and one another at a reception.
